Kathmandu, November 1. Wondering when the first consignment of Chinese oil assistance will arrive in Kathmandu from Kerung? Well, much depends on Nepal Oil Corporation and those at the helm at Rasuwagadhi customs.
In what is a classic case of lack of coordination between government bodies, three oil tankers have remained stuck at the customs for around 24 hours. “We had thought we would not have to pay customs duties to Rasuwagadhi customs for oil brought from China as grant. But the customs did not let the tankers pass without payment of duties. Completing the payment process took time,” NOC’s Acting Director Nagendra Shah said explaining the reason behind the delay.
NOC has deposited the sum at the customs bank account. Reportedly, the customs will let the tankers leave for Kathmandu, now.
NOC officials accompanying the consignment said they did not bring money for customs payment, thinking that customs duties are not applicable for oil received as grant.
The three tankers are carrying 27 KL petrol from Kerung. Rasuwa Superintendent of Police said they will not allow the tankers to leave for Kathmandu if they do not get customs clearance by the evening.
“The road is in bad shape. Driving the tankers at night is impossible. If the tankers do not get customs clearance on time, we will let them head for Kathmandu tomorrow,” Bista said.
In all likelihood, the first consignment of Chinese oil will arrive in Kathmandu tomorrow.
